It is one the main constructions in the Plzeň railway junction reconstruction and the crucial Mikulášská Street bridge reconstruction in the city centre while ensuring minimum impacts on the railway transport and one of the backbone road networks and the municipal transport lines. The extension of both bridges resulted in significant improvement of the road transport and overall safety of the road users in the given location. The construction of the new railway station platforms increased the railway infrastructure level and provided maximum comfort for the passengers and safety of the railway operations.

The railway station modernisation is divided into five separate buildings, which are technically and economically linked. This costly modernisation should put the Plzeň railway station in a condition corresponding to its significance and current demands for modern travelling. The entire complex of buildings amounting to approximately 6.3 billion crowns is to be completed in 2022.

Plzeň Junction, 2nd construction – basic technical data:

Speed for passage in the III direction. Transit railway corridor: 80 km/h.
Length of newly laid tracks: 5.5 kilometres.
31 new switches.
35 newly secured switches.
24 switches newly equipped with electric heating.
The new line will reach the length of 17.4 kilometres.
New platform edges 1.1 kilometres long.
New subway 29 metres long.
Baggage tunnel 39 metres long.

The Plzeň Junction, 2nd construction was started in December 2016. It mainly concerns the Plzeň hl. n. station reconstruction. This stage should be completed in 2019. The key projects involve reconstruction of the south section of the railway station and the platforms, the baggage tunnel prolongation, the Cheb pier top reconstruction and the Mikulášská bridges reconstruction. The roads and the space before the station will be implemented including large modifications of the entire infrastructure. Under the railway bridges, the road width will be significantly extended. The current tramway line will obtain a new separate body, the road two lanes in both directions and a new cycleway and pavements will be constructed. At present, works continue in Mikulášská Street on the infrastructure diversions and preparatory works for bringing down the north bridge structure. Works also continue in removing the railway body in the north part of the railway yard and on the required modifications of the traction line and the signalling devices. Work started on shunt rails for the passenger train maintenance.
