This project involved the construction of a new rail vehicle wash, a paint shop and an undercarriage cleaning line for metro trains in the reconstructed and currently completed building No. 2 in the Kabaty metro depot in Warsaw. It also included rail connections, reconstruction of roads, signalling devices and traction and other works related to the completion of the building and installation of the mentioned equipment.

Built-up area of the existing building          2,092 m2

Built-up area after extension   3,788 m2

The original building from the late 1980s was constructed within the Kabaty depot complex. Although the original project calculated with it, the rail vehicle wash was never installed into the building, which was only used as a storage area. Our project involved extension of this building to almost double and equipment corresponding to the current standards. It concerned the following facilities:

The rail vehicle wash is located in the central aisle in the middle of the building. Because of the capacities, two washing portals were proposed for this hall. The time required to wash one train including double rinsing and subsequent drying is reduced to less than 30 minutes compared to a single-portal concept. The portals wash the trains from their ends to the centres. The wastewater runs down into wastewater collectors from which it is conducted to sludge collectors via oil separators, sand filters and activated carbon filters into a treated water collector. Then it flows into the on-site wastewater drainage. The treated water is clear and without smell. The entire washing area is adapted to the washing agent aggressivity. The floors, walls and collectors have special surfaces. Even the heating distribution system is of stainless steel.

The undercarriage cleaner is located in a lateral aisle and covers the entire length of the hall. It can clean the entire train much like the rail vehicle wash. The undercarriages are cleaned by compressed air. This hall is also fitted with a service pit in the entire length. The rails are supported by two rows of pillars, thus enabling comfortable walking under the whole train. The train roofs are maintained and serviced from continuous service bridges located along the sides at the height of 4.0 meters.

The paint shop is used to paint repaired components and its size allows painting a body of the entire carriage. The operation is divided into three separate parts. Sandblasting, where the individual parts are rid of dirt and original paintwork, painting and drying. A paint storage is located next to the paint shop in a separate room.
